The Educational Leadership program prepares candidates for positions as school assistant principals and principals in Nebraska. Our innovative program began in the summer of 1996, and was developed collaboratively with practicing school administrators in Nebraska as well as uses recommendations from the National Policy Board for Educational Administration.
The graduate programs are fully accredited by the North Central Association, the State of Nebraska and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
What skills do leaders need to make a difference in school?
As a graduate student, you will answer this core question through a series of integrated courses and experiences focusing on the various dimensions of school leadership in K-12 schools. Coursework includes:
- Lessons with successful regional leaders who share their unique approaches to leadership, student success and expertise.
- A complex understanding of the role of leaders through classroom learning, field experience, reflective activities and action-based research.
- How to manage change and create collaborative action on behalf of teaching and learning.
You will move through the program in a cadre—a small group of students allowing for a more concept-based process rather than class-based, and building relationships that continue long past commencement.
Coursework the Cadre Takes Together
During the two-year program, students begin in the summer and move through the program as part of a cadre. You will take nine hours of “stand-alone” classes, scheduled separately from the cadre.
EDL 675 Foundations of Educational Leadership - 6 hrs.
EDL 680 or 681 or 682 Elementary or Middle Grades or Secondary Field Experience/Practicum I - 3 hrs.
EDL 683 or 684 or 685 Elementary or Middle Grades or Secondary Field Experience/Practicum II - 3 hrs.
EDL 621 Leadership Internship - 3 hrs.
EDL 686 Advanced Educational Leadership I - 6 hrs.
EDL 687 Advanced Educational Leadership II - 3 hrs.
EDL 695 Research/Project Implementation - 3 hrs.
"Stand Alone" Classes:
EDU 600* Improvement of Instruction or EDU 613 Models of Teaching - 3 hrs.
EDU 601* Critical Issues - 3 hrs.
EDU 602* Assessment for Learning OR EDU 614 Assessment of Literacy Development OR EDL 676 Assessment of Student Learning for Educational Leaders - 3 hrs.
*Six hours of transfer credit can be applied for applicable courses from other institutions.
