Master of Arts in Counseling faculty and students participate in Pride

Dr. Courtney East, director of the MAC program and assistant professor, stands with student Chelsea Koehn in the program's booth at Star City Pride in Lincoln, Nebraska. Humidity, heat and possible storms didn't stop attendees, including a dozen or so Doane students, faculty and alumni, from attending the first day of the city's Pride festivities on Friday, June 9.

Doane’s Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC) faculty and students set up a booth at Lincoln’s Star City Pride Festival on June 9-10, meeting faculty, employees, students and alumni who attended the event and sharing swag and information about the degree program with all who came by.

“The MAC Program is honored to have been a part of the Star City Pride Festival this year,” said Dr. Courtney East, she/her, director of the MAC program and assistant professor. “Not only was it important for our students to engage in the community in a meaningful way, but it was equally critical for us to show up and represent the profession to the LGBTQIA+ communities, as well. The opportunity to have mental health counseling representation at a community Pride event to celebrate queer joy and existence is a special privilege and we hope to join again next year.”

The MAC program also hosted a seminar on “Creating a Gender-Affirming Community” the next week on Friday, June 16. The free event was open to the Doane community and led by Dr. Mickey White, he/him, assistant professor at East Tennessee State University. He shared research and best practices, and opened conversations on enhancing inclusive language and interactions to support transgender and non-binary students, faculty, staff and community members.

Doane's Human Resources and Alumni offices held two Summer Splash events — one Wednesday, June 14 on Bastian Plaza in Crete and one Thursday, June 15 on the patio outside Lincoln's Fred Brown Center. Both events gave employees time to step away from work and connect with colleagues, and sample a few tasty treats from Rosari's Kitchen and The Margarita Man. Bryan Dutcher ’08 named to Eight-Man Hall of Fame Class of 2023

While at Doane, Bryan Dutcher ’08 played football and baseball. But before ever stepping onto Al Papik Field, he was known for his talent as the starting quarterback at Greeley-Wolbach High School in central Nebraska. Dutcher is now a teacher and coach himself, at Platteview High School. He was recognized this June by the Nebraska Eight-Man Football Coaches Association (NEMFCA), inducted into the organization’s Eight-Man Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
