Doane University is celebrating the success of four alumni who were recently honored by the Nebraska School Counselor Association during its annual Academy Conference on Nov. 20–21 in Omaha.
Three Doane School Counseling graduates were named Nebraska School Counselors of the Year, representing the elementary, middle and high school levels. The awards recognize outstanding leadership, advocacy and service to students across the state.
Ann Spotanski, a counselor at Clinton Elementary School in Lincoln Public Schools, was named Elementary School Counselor of the Year. Spotanski earned her master’s degree in school counseling from Doane in 2022. She also holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Doane (2005) and a degree in educational leadership (2013).
Kate Pittack, a counselor at Scott Middle School in Lincoln Public Schools, was named Middle School Counselor of the Year. Pittack graduated from Doane’s school counseling program in 2021.
Jake Willems, a counselor at Aurora High School, was named High School Counselor of the Year. Willems earned his master’s degree in school counseling from Doane in 2017. He also holds an undergraduate degree in special education from Doane (2009) and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction (2014). Willems currently serves as an adjunct instructor in Doane’s School Counseling program.
The Nebraska School Counselor Association presents the awards annually, selecting one counselor from each level: elementary, middle and high school. Nominees are narrowed to 12 semifinalists who then complete a rigorous application process. Winners are announced during the conference.
In addition to the counselor awards, Doane also congratulates Lori Hemmett of Lincoln Public Schools, who was named Administrator of the Year. Hemmett serves as a school counseling supervisor and was recognized for her leadership in empowering school counselors and prioritizing students’ academic, social-emotional and career development. The award honors administrators who advocate for comprehensive school counseling programs and support the professionals who lead them.
Hemmett graduated from Doane’s educational leadership program in 2024 and has been a longtime partner and supporter of the university’s School Counseling program.
