Doane has a rich history of supporting those that defend our freedom.

Brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces have chosen to pursue a college education through Doane because we meet the needs of all of our students. We are built on the principle that when students invest their time, energy and money in a college education, it is our duty and responsibility as a college to honor that investment by giving students the resources and support they need to achieve success.

FAQ

Can I receive financial aid and VA benefits?

The VA has some great resources to find out if you’re eligible for education benefits. Start there, and if you have additional questions, please reach out to us.

Does Doane grant credit for military training?

Doane students can transfer up to 90 hours of academic credit for formal instruction they have completed successfully in the military. Credit is awarded following the recommendations of the American Council on Education (ACE). Students should have their military transcript submitted to the Registrar’s Office for review.

After becoming eligible for benefits, do I have to do anything?

Chapters 30 and 1606 need to verify attendance each month via the WAVE system (Web Automated Verification of Enrollment). Monthly payments are not dispersed until this is done. The VA also now requires Chapter 33 students to verify attendance each month. Students will need to contact the VA to enroll for text or email verification.

Who will my classmates be?

At our Crete campus, you’re more likely to find a traditional, residential undergraduate college experience, but that doesn’t mean everyone is a recent high school graduate. Our Lincoln campus location offers both undergraduate and masters programs, with a greater focus on non-traditional students who prefer evening and weekend classes, and even online options. Students — and faculty and staff! — have diverse backgrounds that have influenced their decisions to pursue the next step in their education and career, including military experience.

When are classes offered?

At our Crete campus, you’re more likely to find a traditional, residential undergraduate college experience. Classes are held throughout the day. Our Lincoln campus location offers both undergraduate and masters programs, but focuses more on non-traditional students. Classes are held during evenings and weekends, and may even be held online.

I am in the Reserves / National Guard full-time and receive tuition assistance. Am I eligible for VA benefits, too?

Eligibility for VA benefits is established by the VA and based on time in service. Check with your Education Service Officer if you have questions.

I am Chapter 35 and know some students receive a tuition waiver. Am I eligible for that?

This is a state benefit established by a Nebraska statute. Tuition waivers are only available through public post-secondary institutions in Nebraska. This does not include Doane. For more information on tuition waivers call the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs at 402-471-2458.

Is my VA money sent to me or directly to Doane?

VA checks are sent directly to the student at the current mailing address on record or by direct deposit. You can call toll free 1-877-838-2778 to sign up or change your direct deposit. The Post-9/11 Bill, Chapter 33, benefits will be sent directly to Doane. Education benefits are paid in arrears.

How long does it take to receive money from the VA?

The first time you complete the Application for VA Education Benefits it will take about 8-10 weeks for processing to be completed by the St. Louis Regional Processing Office.  At extremely busy times, such as the beginning of the fall term, processing may exceed 10 weeks. You will receive a Certificate of Eligibility award letter from VA when processing has been completed. Please read and keep this document since it contains important information about your benefit (eligibility percentage) as well as instructions on how to self-verify your enrollment (if required).  A copy of this letter also needs to be given to your campus VA representative.

Does Doane offer ROTC courses?

Military science courses are available to Doane students through a cooperative program with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Military science is not an academic major, but credits apply toward graduation from Doane. For more information, contact our director of veteran and military student services at [email protected] or 402.466.4774.
