Lauren Schmidt ’19
Accounting and Business Administration
On the hunt for a college that would provide similar feelings and opportunities she had in her small hometown, Lauren discovered Doane and realized she didn't have to settle for less at a big university. The close-knit atmophere and opportunity to thrive in a small environment while pursing her many passions piqued her interest in Doane. However, it was the ability to get an accounting degree that prepared her for the CPA exam that really sealed the deal.
"I initially came here for accounting and almost immediately added the business major because they coincide so well, and the business program at Doane makes it easy to double major."
Since coming to Doane, Lauren's made a lot of connections in and out of the classroom. She appreciates the strong student-teacher relationship that develops when professors not only teach but also directly advise their students and help lead student organizations. She's also been able to pursue a double major while being involved in women's basketball, the honors program, Accounting Club, Cardinal Key, Phi Beta Lambda, Alpha Lambda Delta, and peer tutoring.
"As long as you are willing to put in the work and have a good attitude about it all, you will get way more than a piece of paper from Doane."
And that's what Earn Your Shield means to Lauren: "It means that I learned how to take my education into my own hands, that I got out of Doane what I put into it and more. The shield isn't just the piece of paper that I will get after four years here. It's also how I use my education afterwards and what I can do with it that will make it useful in the future."
