Kelli Albracht isn’t just a small town girl, but she’s definitely from one. Coming from Arlington, Nebraska (population: 1,243), Kelli says she visited some large universities in big cities in the region, but they weren’t for her.
“My brother went to KU, so I visited there, but it was kind of overwhelming since I’m from a small town,” Albracht said in an interview. “When I visited Doane it felt more like home. When I came here, I felt really comfortable.” Albracht appreciates Doane’s small size not only for its homey feeling but also for the sense of community it fosters.
“I think the small campus for sure makes it feel a lot safer, but it’s also welcoming because I know a lot of faculty and students,” she says. “Pretty much everywhere I am I know a few people by name, and they know my name.”
Kelli wasn’t sure what she wanted to study when she came to Doane but quickly found her passion for graphic design.
“I knew I wanted to do something in a creative field,” she says. “I took a class about World War propaganda. That professor was the graphic design professor, and she got me interested.”
Albracht has been able to build one-on-one relationships with her professors and advisors at Doane, something she doesn’t think would have happened at a larger school. “It’s a great place to try to figure out what you want to do,” she says. “It’s that personalized experience and the people who will help you figure it out.”
