Kansas City

Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication

I take pride in helping others accomplish their educational goals. I will always be a Tiger!

India Williams didn’t know about Doane when she was a high school student in Kansas City, Missouri but her high school guidance counselor, a Doane graduate, saw great potential in her and encouraged India to enroll at Doane, where her capabilities could be fully realized.

The counselor even drove India from Kansas City to Crete for a campus visit. After the visit, she was immediately interested. However it was the scholarships, grants and journalism opportunities that sealed the deal and helped India became the first in her family to attend college.

India quickly became a charismatic campus leader, involved with The Doane Owl, Doane Television, Doane Ambassadors and Student Congress. Of all her campus roles, though, working with Multicultural Services, Students for Change and the Trio program were most important to her.

In 2007, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communication. Currently, you’ll find her working to eliminate opportunity gaps between students from high-and-low-income communities in the Kansas City area.

India received the university’s Young Alumni Award in 2016 for her activism and dedication to education and Doane. She has already given back to Doane, wanting to help other students start their journeys on the campus she loved and impacted. India also serves on Doane’s KC Area Alumni Chapter Leadership Team.

When asked why she gives back, India explained, “A speaker by the name of John Harris, whom I met at Doane University, once told me he ‘plants the seeds so others can enjoy the shade.’ This is exactly why I give my time, funds, and support to my alma mater.”
