Chris Goplin '19
Grand Island, Nebraska
Health Science | Director of Respiratory Care, CHI Health St. Francis
Chris Goplin had a job he liked as a respiratory therapist, but he didn’t have a degree. He knew he needed one to move up in his career, but how with a family and a full-time job?
“I’m in every sense of the word a nontraditional student,” Goplin said. “I think that’s what Doane does so extremely well; they tailor that program for the people who are exactly like me, who need full time jobs to support our families.”
Goplin didn’t think he’d get anything more out of his time at Doane than a bachelor’s degree he needed to move on in his job. He earned the degree he needed, but he says he got a lot more than just that.
“I just wanted to get this done and be done with it,” he said. “But the people that you meet in those programs really do make you rethink your education and what it means to continue to obtain higher levels of education. They make you want to keep going by giving you material you can work with.”
Now applying for master’s degree programs, Goplin, who is now director of respiratory care at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island, says he wishes he would have learned sooner how worthwhile a Doane education could be.
“They want to engage you and make the classes worth your time,” he says. “If people knew how easy they make it for you, how friendly it is to go to Doane and complete your degree and advance yourself, and open up doors, then more people would enroll at Doane.
“I truly believe that.”
