Project Outline

The Sport and Fitness Facilities Project focuses on three key initiatives:

  • the expansion of Fuhrer Field House,
  • refurbishing of Simon Field and rededication as Al Papik Field,
  • and construction of the George and Sally Haddix Recreation and Athletic Center.

The Legendary Coaches Campaign seeks to raise $5.7 million to expand Fuhrer, improve our football facilities, and complete the Haddix Recreation and Athletic Center. Upon completion of the campaign, the Fred Beile Competition Arena, the Bob Erickson Court and the Al Papik Field will be dedicated-their legacy on campus, along with the thousands of students' lives they touched.

The strength of our facilities must be on par with the strength of our faculty and staff, and the very Doane experience our alumni rave about. The Sport & Fitness Facilities Project will help to attract new students, retain current ones and benefit faculty, staff and the Crete community.

The proposed Fuhrer Field House renovation is one component of the Legendary Coaches Campaign. Created to honor legendary coaches Fred Beile, Al Papik '50 and the late Bob Erickson '57, the Legendary Coaches Campaign seeks to raise $5.7 million to expand Fuhrer, improve our football facilities, and complete the Haddix Recreation and Athletic Center.  For more information on the campaign and how it will honor these legendary coaches, please visit the Legendary Coaches web page.

The Fuhrer Field House renovation project includes:

  • The addition of 20,694 sq. ft that will create a 79,572 sq. ft. facility
  • A 200-meter indoor track
  • Four courts that will be available for various sports and recreational use
  • New lobby and concessions area
  • Renovated bathroom facilities
  • A large meeting room
  • Updates to the existing classroom and office spaces

"We ran home meets because everybody wanted to come in 1970 to Fuhrer Fieldhouse. We had teams coming from Texas up here to run in our indoor facility. Today....our own kids don't want to run at home because they know they are at a disadvantage on a 160 meter track."

"So I am asking you, all, help us make the renovation of Fuhrer Fieldhouse  real accomplishment and do it within a short period of time."

Professor Emeritus
Head Track Coach 1961-1998

Photo of Renovated Simon FieldConstructed in 1929, Simon Field inside Memorial Stadium has long been the home of Tiger football. As a key component of the Legendary Coaches Campaign the field and complex will undergo a renovation prior to being named Al Papik Field. These improvements will include but are not limited to the replacement of the artificial turf and various updates to stadium facilities. Other improvements, such as fitness facilities, will greatly benefit the football program with their training.

Photo of Bob Erickson Court inside the George and Sally Haddix Recreation and Athletic Center at Doane CollegeGroundbreaking on this 63,535 sq. ft. building took place in June with a completion date of Fall of 2010. Nearly $13 million has been raised to date, with funding nearly complete. A performance gym for volleyball and basketball competition is just one feature of this amazing facility, which also includes a fitness center,  a Hall of Fame Room, classrooms and office space. With the opening of the Haddix Recreation and Athletic Center, the new gym floor will be named the Bob Erickson Court.
