Tigers Sweep Mount Marty

Doane picked up a pair of wins over Mount Marty in GPAC softball action on Sunday afternoon.  The Tigers won game one, 5-4, and game two, 8-0 in five innings.

Game One: W 5-4
Doane had to rally from behind to defeat the Lancers in game one, using three runs in the fifth to take a lead.

The Tigers got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first.  With two outs in the inning, Christy Kobza singled and came around to score on a double by Jennifer Montoya.

Mount Marty scored three runs in the second off of starter Emily Larsen.  Larsen walked three batters with one out in the inning and the Lancers picked up runs on an infield hit, ground out and wild pitch.

The two teams went into the fifth inning with Mount Marty leading 3-1.

Amber Stater led off the inning with a pinch hit single.  Kayla Hochstein followed with a pinch hit double to plate Deidre Cardoza, who re-entered for Stater.  Whitney Poole, re-entering for Hochstein, scored on a triple by Kobza to tie the game.  Kobza scored on Alyssa Ledon's single to center field to take a 4-3 lead.

In the sixth, Doane added a run as Hannah Kroese walked with one out in the inning.  Following a fly out, Kroese stole second base and moved to third base on a wild pitch.  She scored on Poole's base hit to center field.

Mount Marty rallied in the top of the seventh inning, loading the bases with no outs.  The Lancers scored a run on a passed ball to cut the Tiger lead to one.  Following a fielder's choice that did not result in an out, Mount Marty had the bases loaded once again with no outs. 

Emily Larsen struck out the next batter for the first out and recorded the second out by inducing a ground ball back to the pitcher's circle and making the throw home for the force out.  A ground out to shortstop ended the inning and the Lancers stranded three runs on base to end the game.

Larsen threw a complete game, five-hitter.  She allowed four runs, three earned, while walking six and striking out six.

Poole and Kobza went 2-for-3 apiece, each collecting a RBI.  Kobza scored two runs for the Tigers.

Game Two: W 8-0
Doane made quick work of the Lancers in game two, enforcing the mercy rule after five innings.

After a scoreless first inning, the Tigers plated two runs in the second.  Jennifer Liddell reached on an error and scored from first base on a double by Deidre Cardoza.  Cardoza scored when Kayla Hochstein reached on an error by the Lancers.

In the third inning, Jennifer Montoya led off with a double and moved to third base on a ground out.  She came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Liddell as Doane took a 3-0 lead.

Doane added a run in the fourth to increase their lead.  Kobza walked with two outs and scored on a double by Montoya.

In the fifth, Liddell led off with a single to start the inning for the Tigers.  Dani Russell ran for Liddell and scored on a triple by Emily Larsen.  With one down, Hochstein reached on an infield single to give the Tigers runners at the corners.  Hochstein stole second base and scored as Amber Stater picked up a pinch hit double to right field.  Larsen also scored on the play as the Tigers took a 7-0 lead.  Nguyen re-entered the game and scored on a single by Hannah Kroese to end the game.

Liddell threw a two-hit shutout for the Tigers.  She walked two batters and struck out three.

At the plate, Montoya led the way with a 3-for-3 effort with a run scored and a RBI.  She had two doubles in the game.  Cardoza went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.  Kroese went 2-for-4 with a RBI for the Tigers.  Stater was 1-for-1 with two RBIs.
