Tigers Pick Up First Week Track Honors
Four Doane athletes were honored this week in track and field by the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). Abby Schlueter and Kym Bennett took the weekly athlete-of-the week honors on the women's side while Maurice Smith and D'Artagnan Dai'Re took the honors on the men's side. Below is the GPAC release.
Abby Schlueter, Doane
Doane's Abby Schlueter is the field athlete-of-the-week. Schlueter, a junior from Beatrice, placed first in the triple jump and second in the long jump at the Ward Haylett Invite. Her measurement in the triple jump was 37-06.75, while in the long jump she posted a 17-03.50 mark. The mark in the triple jump meets the NAIA automatic standard, while the long jump measurement is a provisional mark. Schlueter was a NAIA All-American for Indoor Track and Field last year.
Kym Bennett, Doane
Doane's Kym Bennett is the track athlete-of-the-week. Bennett, a junior from Bellevue, won two events at the Ward Haylett Invite on Saturday in Crete, Nebraska. In the mile she clocked a time of 5:15.11, while in the 1000 meters she posted a time of 3:07.49. Her time in the mile is an automatic NAIA qualifying time, while she was just three seconds off qualifying in the 1000 meters. Bennett was a NAIA All-American for Indoor Track and Field last year.
Maurice Smith, Doane
Doane's Maurice Smith is the field athlete-of-the-week. Smith, a junior from Grand Prairie, Texas, placed first in the long jump at the Ward Haylett Invite with a leap of 23-09.5 inches. The mark automatically qualifies him for the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships. Smith was a NAIA All-American for Indoor Track and Field last year.
D'Artagnan Dai'Re, Doane
Doane's D'Artagnan Dai'Re is the track athlete-of-the-week. Dai'Re, a junior from West Covina, California, placed first in the 55 meters and second in the 200 meters at the Ward Haylett Invite. His time in the 55 meters is a NAIA provisional mark, while his time of 23.18 is the top mark currently in the NAIA. Dai'Re was a first team GPAC football selection this past fall.
