Tigers Give No. 23 Lancers a Scare

The Tiger women's basketball team gave No. 23 Mt. Marty a scare on Saturday afternoon but in the end the Lancers held on for a 71-66 victory. The loss kept the Tigers from clinching a post-season home berth for the First Round of the GPAC Tournament. Doane needs one win in the final two games to clinch a home game.

Doane jumped out early on the Lancers, 12-1, as the Tiger seniors paced the way. Brittany Lurz had five points and Kalen Carlson added two during the run while Nicole Skolnick posted two offensive rebounds and a steal in the first four minutes of play.

The Tigers continued to maintain their early lead, holding an 18-8 advantage after seven minutes of play. Mount Marty went on a 22-11 run to take their first lead of the game with 3:50 remaining. The Lancers led 34-32 at halftime.

In the second half, Mount Marty built their biggest lead of the game, 49-39, just five minutes into the half. Doane scored the first three points of the half before the Lancers went on a 15-4 run as Jenny Miller posted seven of the Lancer points.

Doane battled back with a 13-2 run as Kristine Ortmeier had nine of the Tigers' points and Doane led 52-51. Miller responded with a three-point basket to give the Lancers the lead as they built it to seven points. Cheryl Braithwait scored on three consecutive possessions for the Tigers to even the score at 59-all with five minutes to play but Miller once again stepped up and hit a three-pointer and a lay-up to give Mt. Marty a five-point lead. The Tigers had four straight possessions late where they missed shot jump shot attempts that allowed Mt. Marty to hang on.

Braithwait led the Tigers with 24 points, three assists and three steals. Ortmeier added 11 points while Carlson posted 10 for the Tigers. Skolnick led all players with 11 rebounds, six on the offensive end.

Miller led the Lancers with 24 points and four assists. Tierney Schumacher added 14 points and six steals.

Doane will travel to Fremont to take on Midland University on February 16 at 7:30 PM.
