Tigers Earn AVCA Academic Honor
For Doane College volleyball, excellence on and off the court are keys to a successful program. The Tigers once again have been named a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. Doane posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.33 for Coach Cindy Meyer.
Doane has been on the AVCA list each of the past three years. A record number of 481 institutions were recognized this year, including nine of Great Plains Athletic Conference members. All five members in the state of Nebraska received the honor.
The Tigers were joined by conference schools Briar Cliff, Concordia, Dakota Wesleyan, Hastings, Midland, Mount Marty, Nebraska Wesleyan and Sioux Falls (USF will not be a member in 2011-12).
A total of 30 teams from NAIA institutions were named to the list. Six of those teams qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in 2010. Doane, along with Briar Cliff and NAIA Opening Round opponent Trinity Christian were among the exclusive six that included Indiana Tech, Rocky Mountain and Southern Oregon.
By advancing to the NAIA National Tournament, Doane qualified for the third consecutive year. The Tigers are coming off a 27-8 season and No. 15 ranking in the NAIA. They return five starters from last year's squad along with two All-Americans.
