Theatre Wins Regional KCACTF Awards

Congratulations to Doane Theatre for its prestigious showing at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Ames in mid-January!

Twenty eight Doane students participated, competing against 87 colleges and universities and 1,600 theatre students in a seven-state region. Along with Director of Theatre Robin McKercher, they won numerous awards:

Five Regional Meritorious Theatre Awards
The Cast won the Meritorious Award in Production Ensemble for "See Rock City and Other Destinations"
Robin McKercher in Outstanding Direction for "The 39 Steps"
Robin McKercher in Outstanding Sound Design for "The 39 Steps"
Katie Leware (sophomore) in Outstanding Stage Management for "Cyrano"
Jimmy Reynolds (junior) and Lauren Soto (first year) in Outstanding Prop Design for "Cyrano"

Best Selected Scene in Region V
Joe Anderson (junior) and Dayna Svoboda (first year) won for their efforts in "The 39 Steps" representing the top eight productions of Region V

Two First Place Honors in the National Design Technology Awards
For the third year in a row, Doane sends a student designer to Washington DC to compete with the nation's top elite student designers! Kim Williams (sophomore) won first place in the Barbizon Award for Lighting (realized lighting design) for "Cyrano" with a paid trip to Washington DC in March to compete with seven other of the nation's top student designers (grad and undergrad.)

Jimmy Reynolds (junior) won Stagecraft Institute Award for his excellent scenic design of "Spinning into Butter." The Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas has partnered with KCACTF to award students from each region a one-week master class in the area of their choice. Each award includes a full tuition grant, housing, daily breakfast and lunch.

Bailey Peyton (senior) participated in Costume Design with her work on "Spinning into Butter"; Lauren Soto (first year) in Prop Design for "Cyrano"; Katie Leware (sophomore) in Production Portfolio and Lisa Krabbenhoft (junior) in Stage Management for "The 39 Steps"

Irene Ryan Acting Competition
In the Irene Ryan Acting Competition: Allison VanDriel (senior) (w/ Patrick Conley, first year) made it to the FINAL ROUND of 16 out the starting 298 actors in the Preliminary Round. This is a rare accolade culminating in a final knock-out show for nearly 2,000 people. 

Courtney Wood
(sophomore) (w/ Wesley McCord, first year); Ian McKercher (senior) (w/ Mimi Shirley, sophomore);  Bre Carodine (junior) (w/ Coryelle Thomas, sophomore);  Nate Mireles (senior) (w/ Jimmy Reynolds, junior); and Joe Anderson (junior,) (w/ Gabby Chavers, sophomore) had excellent showings in the Preliminary Rounds of 298 actors.

Faculty Directing Showcase and 10-Minutes Play Readings
Robin McKercher was selected to compete in the Directing Challenge of casting, rehearsing and presenting a ten-minute scene ["Miranda Rites"] with only six hours of rehearsal over two days w/ senior Rebecca Wilson, selected to Assistant Director, and senior Nate Mireles as an actor for one of the competing faculty directors.

Kaylee Roach (first year) was cast in the National KCACTF Award-Winning Play Concert Reading of "Figures"

Through regional and national festivals, KCACTF participants celebrate the creative process; see one another's work, and share experiences and insights within the community of theater artists. The KCACTF honors excellence of overall production and offers student artists individual recognition through awards and scholarships in playwriting, acting, criticism, directing, and design.
