Northwestern Sweeps Doubleheader
Northwestern College came to Crete and picked up a pair of wins over the Tigers in GPAC play on Saturday afternoon. The Red Raiders won a pitching duel, 4-2, in game one and rallied to take game two 8-5. Northwestern was the home team in both games because the doubleheader was supposed to be played in Orange City, Iowa.
In game one, 2007 GPAC Pitcher-of-the-Year Mihai Burlea out-dueled Evan Koetter for the victory. Burlea allowed two runs, one earned, and struck out seven batters. Koetter allowed four runs, two earned, and struck out three batters.
Thomas Frinkman, Calan Reichstein and Cody Shoultz collected two hits each for Doane. Evan Bumgarner had Doane's lone RBI in the game. Doane finished with nine hits and stranded nine on base.
Doane struck early in game two, platting four runs in the top of the first inning. Mike Mendenhall led off the game with a triple and scored on a Luke Henderson single. Mendenhall finished the game going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Bryan Dutcher and Cody Shoultz added two hits each. Evan Bumgarner and Shoultz added RBIs for the Tigers.
Jacob Bartek took the loss for Doane, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing six runs (four earned).
Doane was plagued by missed opportunities as they collected 12 hits and stranded eight runs on base.
Doane will host Manhattan Christian College on Monday, March 31. The two teams will play one, nine inning game.
