No. 4 Briar Cliff Avoids Tiger Upset Bid
The Tiger men's basketball team came up shy by one point in their upset bid of No. 4 Briar Cliff University on Saturday, falling 65-64 to the Chargers. In a battle of the last two teams to remain unbeaten in conference play, the Chargers took advantage of a late scoring drought by the Tigers to remain unbeaten on the season.
After Doane jumped out in front by five to open the game, the Chargers battled back and the squads went back and forth for the final 18 minutes of the half. Neither team led by more than three points at any time during the final 18 minutes. Nick Reed hit a three-pointer to give Doane a 29-28 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, Doane was able to build a six point lead, 39-33. Briar Cliff responded and tied the game up at 43-all following a 10-4 run. Doane bounced ahead by six once again with eight minutes remaining, 53-47. However, the Tigers were held scoreless over the next six minutes and the Chargers took a 58-53 lead.
Josh Riser hit three three-point baskets in the final 66 seconds of play but Jake Shipley was 4-of-4 at the free throw line in the final 10 seconds to cap the win for Briar Cliff.
Riser led the Tigers with 16 points while Reed had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Taylor Oltjenbruns had 11 points and seven assists.
Chase Vander Feen finished with 18 points as he hit four three-point baskets. Matt Geelan added 14 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for the Chargers.
