National Champ Now a Tiger
Brijesh (B.J.) Lawrence, the 2010 NAIA National Outdoor 100-meter dash champion, has enrolled at Doane College following the closure of Dana College this summer. Lawrence ran a time of 10.43 to win the title in Marion, Indiana, in May. He was also sixth in the 200-meter dash with a 21.14 clocking.
Lawrence had many suitors after June 30 but felt that the tradition that he saw at Doane through competitions was too much to pass up.
"I chose Doane mainly due to the fact that they invest in their track program," Lawrence said. "I saw there was tradition in track combined with coaches with decades of experience. I will also have great athletes to train with; it was a win-win situation."
This summer, B.J. went back to his home country of St. Kitts & Nevis in the Caribbean to compete. He ran the 100m dash at the St. Kitts-Nevis National Invitational Championships in Basseterre and placed second with a time of 10.64. He also ran on the 4x100m relay team that won with a time of 40.70.
Over the course of the summer, he competed in several other meets and improved his personal best times, running a 10.37 in the 100m and a 20.88 in the 200m dashes.
After not competing for two years, Lawrence said last year was quite the surprise. But now he has high expectations going into 2011.
"I expect a lot of myself and the coaching staff," Lawrence commented. "My goals for the 2011 season are to stay injury free, sharpen my running mechanics and improve on my times. I intend to win, defend my national title (outdoor 100m) and qualify for the St. Kitts & Nevis National Team again."
The Tigers coaches and athletes have expressed excitement with the addition of Lawrence to the squad. Doane has won the last four GPAC Indoor Championships and the last three GPAC Outdoor Championships.
