Multicultural programming expanded for Black History Month

Multicultural Support Services (MSS) is sponsoring the Saakmu Dance Troupe for its Black History Month event, but is also coordinating Karnaval – a Fat Tuesday celebration – with International Programs and foreign language and faculty.

The Saakmu Dance Troupe was supposed to bring its West African dance and music to the School of Arts and Sciences in Crete for a Feb. 4 performance in Heckman Auditorium. The event is currently being re-scheduled.

The Karnaval night, slated for 7 p.m. Feb. 18 in Don Nyrop Great Hall, is open to foreign language, multicultural studies and minority students. The event will celebrate southern Creole heritage with mask-making, music, piñatas and refreshments, including root beer and a Mardi Gras king cake.

Dining Services will host a Black History Month celebration with special recipe items during lunch hours on Feb. 12.

For more information, contact MSS Director Wilma Jackson or Director of International Programs Jan Willems.
