Doane College senior Virgil Mitchell participated in the USATF National Club Track & Field Championships held in New York City this weekend, running for Team Nebraska.

Mitchell ran in three events at the meet, the 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles and a leg of the distance medley relay (DMR). He walked away with the 110m hurdles title, a fourth place finish in the 400m hurdles and a third place finish in the DMR.

The 2011 NAIA Track & Field Outdoor 110m hurdles national champion, Mitchell posted the top mark in the prelims on Friday with a time of 14.08. On Saturday, he claimed the event in come-from-behind fashion as he posted a time of 13.97. He edged out Eric Keddo who posted a time of 14.01. Trailing through the first eight hurdles, Mitchell gained momentum going over the final two hurdles for the win.

"I felt good entering the race after running at the USATF National Championships," Mitchell said. "I ran against the best in the world then and it put me in a new mode for track and field. I knew if I kept the race close, I could out kick and pass (Keddo) at the end."

Mitchell ran a time of 51.96 in the 400m hurdles. In the final 100 meters, Mitchell passed up two runners for the fourth place finish. Running a leg of the DMR, Mitchell ran a time of 46.2 in the 400m leg.

"Going into the meet, I felt very good because of my training with Coach Ed Fye and Adam Landerfield, a former NAIA national champion for Doane, since the NAIA Championships."

Team Nebraska took fifth in the meet with 49 points. Mitchell earned 16.5 points in the meet.
