President Jacque Carter

As we wrap up our fall semester I think about our collective accomplishments and the bright future I see for our university.

Our research enterprise is growing, thanks to the work of many faculty, and support from our Advancement Office’s Grants and Foundation Relations efforts under the leadership of Sarah Zulkoski. Collectively, we have secured $5 million in new funding, with another $1.5 million pending. The results include enhanced opportunities to involve Doane students at all levels in research projects. I see such opportunities as a key component of a world-class liberal arts education and an underpinning of our culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Adult education programs are growing as we explore targeted areas of study that match the mission and capabilities of Doane. As one example, students from 48 states have taken Doane’s online courses that are prerequisites for specific health professional programs. Andrea Butler and her team are working to maximize both the quality and reach of a rapidly evolving array of online courses that represent Doane’s commitment to nurturing agile minds in multiple high-demand fields of study.

Enrollment in our undergraduate programs at the Crete campus are growing and our numbers show promise for 2018. Applications by potential first-year students are up 22% over last year. Included in that number is a big leap in out-of-state applications, up by 81%, or 163 students.

Of our 1570 applicants, 543 have made a campus visit, a 14% increase in applicant visits over last year.

It is to the credit of each person involved in the life this university that we can point to countless examples of our mission being played out in human lives--Doane students maturing into responsible citizens and leaders, inspired by the exceptional liberal arts education we continue to build.

As we look ahead to 2018, I look forward to working with each member of our Doane community to continue to build on our momentum and reputation.

Jacque Carter, Doane University President
