M-side Strikes Early to Down Tigers

Morningside College scored on five of their first six possessions to pull away for a 56-14 victory over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa.  The Mustangs jumped out to a 56-0 lead on eight offensive touchdowns, five rushing and three passing.  Four of the Morningside scoring drives started in Doane territory.

The Tigers got on the board in the as time expired in the third quarter when Justin Nelson scored on a 79-yard run.  The kick was blocked, holding the Tigers' score at six points.  After a couple of punts by both teams, the Tigers put their final touchdown on the board when JR Artozqui hit Alex Renshaw for a 92-yard reception.  The point after try was taken into the end zone by Robbie Trent for a two-point conversion.  Though the score may not indicate it, by day's end the Tiger offense had a season high in rushing, passing and total offense.  Nelson recorded his first 100-yard game of the season, rushing for 138 yards on 20 carries.  Artozqui completed five passes of 122 yards.  Renshaw had four receptions for 104 yards.

The Tiger defense held the Mustangs to 94 yards rushing after giving up 150-plus yards the previous two games.  Dustin Lind led the team with 11 total tackles, seven solo.  He also had 3.5 tackles for loss.  Kyle Coffie and Seth Styskal had six tackles apiece for Doane.  Doane will receive a bye this week in GPAC play and resume the conference schedule when they host Nebraska Wesleyan on October 7 in Crete.
