Late Basket Dooms Tigers
Doane came back from a 14 point deficit with four minutes remaining but a late tip-in ended the Tiger rally as they fell 68-64 to Sioux Falls.
Doane trailed by nine points at halftime, 34-25, due to cold shooting. The Tigers shot just 27.6 percent while the Cougars shot 53.8 percent. Doane was 5-of-9 from three-point range in the first half.
In the second half, Sioux Falls held the Tigers down while building a 15 point lead on two occasions. The Cougars saw Doane go on a 6-0 run to pull within nine with five minutes left but responded with a 5-0 run over the next minute to go up by 14. Over the next three minutes, Doane grabbed momentum behind a pair of three-point plays (made basket and free throw after a foul), a three-point basket from Dane Cruz and three free throws by Cruz after being fouled as the shot clock was winding down. He collected nine straight points to tie the game at 61-61.
USF went to their end of the court and regained the lead when Jesse Huser collected an offensive rebound and put back. Doane was unable to answer and USF hit 5-of-6 free throws to seal the victory in the final 20 seconds.
Doane was led by 21 points from Cruz. He did, however, struggle from the floor by shooting 8-of-21 and 1-of-7 from three-point range. Brett McFarland added 15 points while Tyler Cyboron posted 14 points. Kolby Hamilton had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Doane will take on Concordia University on Tuesday, January 29. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM. The game can be heard on the Tiger Sports Network.
