Hetrick honored with Educator of the Year award
Dr. Kristen Hetrick, associate professor of German and National Fellowships Advisor at Doane, was awarded the 2018 Educator of the Year by the Nebraska Association of Teachers of German (NATG) at the Nebraska International Languages Association (NILA) annual fall conference on Saturday in Lincoln.
The Nebraska International Languages Association is a state association comprised of teachers of foreign languages throughout the state, representing over 700 teachers from all levels. This year’s NILA Conference was held at Schoo Middle School in Lincoln, where roughly 100 foreign language teachers from K-12 schools and universities across the state were present.
Hetrick was awarded the NATG Teacher of the Year after the NILA received letters of nomination from a combination of Doane faculty members, former students, and colleagues outside of Doane.
“Receiving this award was a really nice surprise,” Hetrick said. “It’s a great honor to be recognized by my colleagues in the state.”
Doane modern language professors Jared List and Josh Pope were also present at the conference and both submitted letters of recommendation for Kristen for this award.
“It was wonderful to see Kristen recognized for her efforts and achievements,” List said. “She has been a role model for service on and off campus, and this award recognizes the impact her leadership has beyond our campus.”
Two recent Doane graduates who are now language teachers in Nebraska were also present at the conference. Colin Koehler ’18 teaches at Mount Michael HS in Omaha and Maggie Hubbell Toczek ’15 is a former Fulbright scholar who is teaching at Omaha Skutt Catholic High School.
For Hetrick, she believes this award is a reflection of not just the Department of Modern Languages at Doane, but also a reflection of the institution as a whole.
“I think this shows that Doane cares about teaching,” Hetrick said. “This is what makes us special - our faculty care about being the best teachers we can be.”
List added, “The award recognizes the department's goal to connect and engage with the community, through teaching, scholarship, and service. As department chair, Kristen continually seeks ways for us to grow as a department and extend our reach beyond campus. She is a great example for her colleagues and students.”
This semester Hetrick is teaching Elementary German, Intermediate German, Conversation German, and the History of Witchcraft.
