Health Sciences program revamped, expanded at Doane
Doane University has revamped its Health Sciences major within the recently-formed Health Sciences Division, providing students interested in the health professions with the foundation needed to succeed in a variety of fields within the healthcare industry.
The Health Sciences - Leadership program is intended for students wishing to pursue a career in the healthcare field. It is also tailored for current healthcare professionals with an associate’s degree in allied health -- such as respiratory care or medical lab technology -- who wish to advance their career. This program is available on Doane’s Lincoln and Grand Island campuses with courses also offered online.
The Health Sciences - Pre-Health Professions program is designed for undergraduate students who aspire to be future health care providers. This program prepares students for graduate health profession education by providing the knowledge, skills, and co-curricular experiences required. This program is available on Doane’s Crete and Lincoln campuses with courses offered online as well.
The Pre-Health Professions track will give students a solid foundation in science and provide opportunities to develop personal skills and attitudes needed for a successful academic and healthcare career. Professional advisors and faculty mentors work with students to build a portfolio and gain experiential learning through job shadowing, evidence-based research, and internship opportunities. The program also features pathways into graduate education programs at select health profession schools.
There are six different emphasis areas offered within the Pre-Health Professions track, including: Pre-Dental, Pre-Medical, Pre-Nursing, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Pharmacy, and Pre-Physician Assistant.
“The variety of health professions represented in the classroom provides rich discussion and perspectives,” said April Minster, Director/Department Chair of Nursing and Health Sciences. “The pre-health advantage will provide intensive professional advising and faculty mentorship to enhance academic and enrichment experiences to fully support students.”
The healthcare industry has grown and the need for trained healthcare professionals continues to grow. Doane’s Health Sciences degree prepares students for career advancement, leadership positions, and graduate education in health professions.
“Health Sciences is a robust and versatile major; it can be general enough to give you flexibility in your future career, or can be the foundation for specializations in pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, radiography, and nuclear medicine,” said Andrea Butler, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, Online Operations and Dean of the School of Integrative Learning. “Health Sciences majors can work in schools, hospitals, government agencies, in public health or administration, or for non-profit groups. The student’s choices are virtually limitless in this dynamic and critical healthcare industry and Doane is here to best prepare you for your desired field.”
