Doane Wins Season Opener

The Doane women's basketball team faced a tough challenge in College of St. Mary on Tuesday evening in the season opener for the Tigers.  The Flames came in off a two losses but were putting up impressive offensive numbers, especially from the three-point line and free throw line.

The Tigers got out to a quick start, leading 21-5 in the first eight minutes of play as six different players scored during the span.  The Tigers took a 44-29 lead into halftime as Cheryl Braithwait hit a three-point basket just before the buzzer.

Doane was able to build their lead in the second half to 27 points with 11:44 remaining but the Flames made a charge and cut the lead to 11 with 3:19 left in the game behind a 21-5 run of their own.  The Tigers out-scored the Flames 10-4 down the final three minutes of play.

Leading the way for Doane was Vanessa Munter as she posted a career-high 31 points to go along with nine rebounds and six steals.  Braithwait added 14 points and Lindsay Shaw picked up 11 points for the Tigers.  All ten players seeing action scored in the game for Doane.

College of St. Mary was led by Lindsey Carlson's 24 points as she hit seven 3-point baskets.  Terra Moyers added 16 points, three assists and three steals before fouling out of the game.

Doane will be in Olathe, Kan., for the MidAmerican Nazarene Classic on November 6 and 7.
