Doane Upsets Hastings College
Discipline and hustle keyed Doane to a 77-64 upset victory over Hastings College. The Broncos are receiving votes in this week's NAIA poll and are only a few weeks removed from a Top 10 ranking.
The Tigers committed only 11 turnovers and was able to run the clock late while picking up several offensive rebounds. Doane knocked down their free throws in the final minutes, finishing 23-of-28 from the line for the game. Dane Cruz shot the majority of the free throws, hitting 12-of-14 as he finished with 14 points. Tyler Cyboron hit some important three-point baskets, finishing with 16 points after connecting on four shots from behind the arc. Jack Lind came off the bench to add 10 points.
In the first half, Doane was able to build a nine point lead behind baskets from Scott Neuhalfen, Trent Schlautman and Cole Christensen. Neuhalfen finished with nine while Schlautman added seven. Kendall Frantz finished with six points and five rebounds, collecting several key boards in the second half.
As the first half was coming to a close, Hastings had closed the gap and taken the lead with 30 seconds remaining behind a Bobby Kempf dunk. With the clock winding down, Dane Cruz penetrated the middle of the lane and kicked out to Ben Streck for a three-point basket in the corner as time expired to give Doane a 36-34 lead at halftime. Cruz had a game-high five assists while Streck finished with seven points.
Doane out-scored Hastings 41-30 in the second half, ending on a 6-0 run at the end of the game. Doane finished with a rebound edge of 37-35.
Kempf led Hastings with 20 points while Scott Wissing added 12 points.
Doane will take on the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday, January 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM. It is Hall-of-Fame weekend at Doane, the 2008 inductees will be honored at halftime of the men's contest. The game can be heard on the Tiger Sports Network.
