Doane to Begin 'Community Meals' Program in Crete

Doane College, in conjunction with First Congregational United Church of Christ in Crete, will begin a new program this month to serve free hot meals to the public.

The first meal will be served Monday, Nov. 26 from 5-7 p.m. at First Congregational UCC at 12th and Ivy Streets in Crete.

The Community Meals program will continue with free meals the last Monday of each month, according to Rev. Karla Cooper, Doane Chaplain and Community Services Coordinator.

"In the United States, we assume people have access to basic necessities like food and shelter, but, unfortunately, a lot of families don't have nutritional hot meals on a daily basis," she said.

Placing the free hot meals at the end of the month may help families get through a week when resources are at the lowest, she said. The program also may eventually offer more meals each month.

Doane will provide food, supplies and volunteer labor, along with other volunteers in Crete.

Donations and volunteers are still needed. If anyone is interesting in volunteering or donating items, please contact the Reverend Karla J. Cooper, Doane College Chaplain/Coordinator of Service Programs at 402.826.6747.
