Doane Tabbed Ninth in GPAC Poll

Doane Tabbed Ninth in GPAC Poll

Despite losing only two seniors to graduation, the Doane Tiger football team was picked to finish ninth this season by the GPAC football coaches in a poll released on Tuesday afternoon.  The GPAC held the 11th annual football media day, this year at The Cornhusker hotel in Lincoln.

Each of the 11 football coaches had an opportunity to talk to the media about their teams for the upcoming season.  The coaches' ballot was taken afterwards and announced to the media in attendance.

Doane will open the season with a night game on September 4 in Sioux City, Iowa, against Morningside College.  The Mustangs have several returners on defense but lost some key members to the offense that scored 78 points against Doane last year.  They will look to several red-shirt freshmen to fill those voids.  Morningside was picked to finish second in the conference standings by the coaches and received one first place vote.

Doane's home opener will be against Dordt College on September 11.  Dordt was picked to finish last in the conference but begin their third year of varsity action.  The Defenders will have 18 players returning who started last year.  Doane is 2-0 all-time against the Defenders but had their hands full in 2009 has Doane won 24-12 in Crete.
