Doane Sweeps in Battle of the Tigers

The Doane softball team bounced back nicely with a pair of wins over Dakota Wesleyan on Friday afternoon, winning 15-7 and 7-3. The Tigers are now 8-6 in the GPAC with eight conference games left.

Game One (W 15-7)
With Doane playing as the away team on their home field for the second time this week, the Tigers opened the first game with seven runs in the first two innings. Dakota Wesleyan was equal to the task, doing the same.

Andrea Gonzales led off the game with a double and came in to score on a home run by Shelby Mendlik, her eighth of the season. Brooke Sampson followed with a single and eventually came in on a single by Alyssa Maraia.

Dakota Wesleyan took the lead in the bottom of the first with four runs on four hits and one Doane error.

Doane took the lead back with four runs in the second. Deidre Cardoza singled and scored from first on a triple by Gonzales to tie the game. Gonzales scored on a ground out by Gina Falciani. The Tigers then loaded the bases and plated two runs on a double error by the DWU second baseman.

Once again, DWU answered and they plated three runs on four hits to tie the game at 7-all.

Both teams were scoreless in the third and Doane took the lead for good in the fourth on a double by Maraia as Christy Kobza scored on the play.

Falciani picked up a two-run double in the fifth to add to the Tiger lead as she brought in Cardoza and Gonzales. Sampson added a single to drive in Falciani.

Doane sealed the game in the seventh with four more runs. Sampson led off the inning with her eighth home run of the season. Brianna Dickinson added a bunt single to plate Kobza and Cardoza had a two-run single to score Dickinson and Amber Stater.

Megan Wingate picked up the win for the Tigers, throwing five shutout innings. She allowed two hits and two walks while striking out four.

Doane collected 24 hits in the game with six players having at least three hits. Kobza led the way with four hits while Gonzales, Sampson, Maraia, Stater and Cardoza had three each. Falciani led the team with three RBIs. Gonzales and Sampson had a team-best three runs scored.

Game Two (W 7-3)
Gonzales got the Tigers off to a quick start with a lead-off home run and Doane eventually had a 7-0 lead in the second game.

In the third, Falciani led off with a single and stole second base. Brooke Sampson doubled to left center but Falciani only advanced to third as she had to hold close to second because the ball just went over the shortstop's glove. Kobza followed with single to plate Falciani and Maraia had a sacrifice fly to score Sampson.

The Tigers added four runs in the fifth. Mendlik led off with a double and scored on a hit by Kobza. Kobza scored on a single by Kylie Garrett. Gonzales added a two-run single to plate Garrett and Maraia.

Dakota Wesleyan plated three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth but was held scoreless the rest of the way.
