Doane Splits with St. Mary on Day Two

The Tiger baseball team concluded their weekend series with the University of St. Mary on Sunday morning, splitting the doubleheader. The Tigers won the series by taking three of the four games. Doane is now 4-1 on the season after a week of play.

Game One
In a pitcher's dual, St. Mary starter Stephen Maurin scattered five hits over seven innings to shutout the Tigers, 1-0. Maurin finished with six strikeouts and did not allow a walk in the game. Doane starter Nick Dawson took the loss, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings of work. He gave up two hits and two walks while striking out four.

The Tigers had opportunities in the game, stranding seven runners on base and four were left in scoring position.

AJ Spanel had a two-out double in the first inning for the Tigers but was unable to advance. In the second inning, Ethan Schroeder advanced to second base on a two-base throwing error with one out. He was not advanced. In the fifth, the Tigers had runners at first and second with two outs but were unable to come up with a hit.

Doane's best two opportunities came in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Anthony Dunn led off with a single but a failed bunt attempt and a force play cut the opportunity short. In the seventh, Jason West was hit by a pitch with two outs and advanced to third on a single by Thomas Albert. He was left stranded at third base.

St. Mary scored their lone run in the sixth. With two outs, Josh Barnes singled and Winston Hines walked. An error on the next at-bat allowed Barnes to score what proved to be the winning run.

Game Two
The Tiger bats got started early and put together six runs on five hits in the first two innings of play. Doane coasted to a 9-3 victory in game two.

Anthony Hincy led off the bottom of the first with a hit by pitch. He moved to third base on a double by Anthony Dunn. Spanel singled to plate a pair of runs for the early Tiger lead.

In the top of the second, St. Mary cut the lead in half following a one-out double by Travis Quick. Kevin Joyce plated the run with a RBI ground out.

In the bottom of the frame, Doane added four runs to their lead. Thomas Albert led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. Dylan Flott reached on an error. With two outs, Spanel reached on an error that scored a run. Mike Albert followed with a single to score Flott. Austin Tharp added another single to bring in Spanel and move Mike Albert to third base. Tharp stole second base and on the errant throw by the catcher, Albert came in to score the final run for the Tigers in the inning.

Doane added two more runs in the fourth. Hincy led off with a single and scored on a double by Dunn. Mike Albert doubled to score Tyler Lohr who was serving as the courtesy runner for Dunn.

St. Mary came back with two runs in the sixth but Doane added a run in the bottom of the inning. Schroeder singled to plate Mike Albert.

Britton Scheele had a solid start on the mound. He allowed three runs on seven hits and two walk while striking out 11 of the 25 batters he faced. Miles Arehart threw the final 1.1 innings, allowing a walk and striking out two.

At the plate, Mike Albert went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Spanel added two RBIs for the Tigers while Dunn posted a multi-hit game with a pair of doubles.

Doane is scheduled to travel to Joplin, Mo., next weekend for four games.
