Doane Splits GPAC Opener

Doane College vs. Dakota Wesleyan University: BATTLE OF THE TIGERS!

Game 1
Dakota Wesleyan, ranked No. 2 in NAIA Region III, jumped on Doane starter Bryan Dutcher for five runs in the first two innings and eventually pulled away for a 19-4 victory.  Doane battled back to pull within two runs at 6-4 after five innings but 13 runs in the final two frames allowed DWU to pull away for the win.

Zach Huston went 4-for-5 with three runs scored for DWU.  Jake Roy, Kyle Isaacson and Mark Wood each collected two hits, which included a home run each, and two runs scored.  Roy finished with five RBIs and Isaacson added four RBIs.

Doane was paced by Mike Mendenhall's two hits, extending his hitting streak to nine games.  Thomas Frinkman, Tim Engelhaupt and Dean Henson had RBIs for Doane.

Freddy Janssen (2-1) picked up the win, pitching six innings and allowing four runs.  Bryan Dutcher (1-3) took the loss, allowing 12 runs (seven earned) in six innings of work.

Game 2
Doane jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an Evan Bumgarner two-run single with two outs.  DWU came back to tie the game when Kyle Isaacson connected with a two-run opposite field home run in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2.  Doane took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning when Dean Henson collected a bases loaded walk.  The Tigers added to their lead in the fourth on a Cody Shoultz single that plated pinch-runner Eric Stuart.

DWU wouldn't go away and the tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning when Zach Huston singled to drive in a run and Jered Benancourt laid down a squeeze bunt to tie the game.  In the top of the seventh inning DWU took their first lead of the game when Huston came through with a two-out double to plate the go-ahead run in Isaacson.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Doane used an error by Huston to put the tying run on base.  Mike Mendenhall followed with a hit-by-pitch and Chris Williams delivered with a single to center field to load the bases with one out.  A ground ball to first base drew a force out at the plate but kept the bases loaded for Doane.  Dean Henson stepped in and laced a shot over the glove of third baseman Mark Wood and down the left field line, plating the tying and game-winning runs with two outs in the last inning.  Doane was victorious 6-5.

Kyle Isaacson and Zach Huston had two hits and two RBIs each.  Doane was limited to six hits in the game, all by different players.  Evan Bumgarner finished with two RBIs while Dean Henson notched three RBIs.

Marshall Carr (1-3) picked up the win for Doane, pitching 1/3 of an inning as he closed out the top of the seventh.  Phil Johnson took the loss, allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings of work.
