Doane Holds Off Chargers for Victory

Doane took advantage of the height difference in their game against Briar Cliff and out-scored the Chargers 17-4 in second chance opportunities on their way to a 71-66 victory in Sioux City.  Doane trailed by four points with five minutes left to play but held a 13-4 advantage in the final minutes.

The Tigers got out to a strong start, scoring on their first five possessions and jump out to a 10-1 lead.  They eventually built a lead of 13 points, 28-15, with 8:08 remaining in the first half.  Briar Cliff closed out the half with a 15-7 run to pull within two points, 32-30.

In the second half, Doane built a lead of nine points with 12 minutes to play but a Charger run of 19-8 gave Briar Cliff their first lead of the game, 55-53.  Doane would answer with a 5-0 run to take a three point lead only to see BCU go on a 7-0 run to go ahead by four points, 62-58, with 5:25 remaining.

The Tigers pulled within two points on a Tiffany Mockenhaupt rebound and put-back.  After a defensive stop, Nicole Anderson knocked down a three-pointer for a Tiger one-point lead.  On Briar Cliff's next possession, they drew a foul to get to the free throw line and regained the lead on Cat Nelson's two free throws.

After the Tigers missed a short jumper, Hannah Helman forced a turnover and took the steal in for a lay-up and Doane one-point lead, 65-64.  Samantha Pearson answered with a jumper of her own to put the Chargers back in front, 66-65, with under two minutes to play.

Lindsay Anderson answered with a basket of her own to give the Tigers a 67-66 lead in the final minute.  After a Briar Cliff timeout, the Chargers took a three-point attempt that missed and L. Anderson pulled down the rebound.  She was subsequently fouled and went to the free throw line.  In the one-and-one opportunity, she missed the front end but the rebound went out-of-bounds off a Briar Cliff player, giving Doane possession.  Alissa Holland received the inbounds pass and was fouled.  She knocked down both free throws to give the Tigers a three point advantage.

Briar Cliff, without a timeout remaining, forced up a three-point attempt and L. Anderson picked up the rebound.  She knocked down both free throws to seal the win for Doane.

Lindsay Anderson finished with a game-high 21 points for the Tigers while adding eight rebounds.  Helman posted 11 points and four assists for the Tigers while Holland notched 10 points and eight rebounds.  Nicole Anderson had a team best three steals to go with her eight points.

Briar Cliff was led by Cat Nelson's 26 points and eight rebounds.  Jamee Phipps added 10 points while Tana Colt posted six steals.
