The Doane women's soccer team showed on Wednesday afternoon that they could hang with some of the best in the NAIA as they took #21 William Jewell College to overtime before falling, 3-2.
After a scoreless first half, William Jewell appeared set to score first as they were awarded a penalty kick early in the second half. Danielle Doerfler took the shot for the Cardinals but was denied as Doane keeper Kelsey Stark made a diving save. The Tigers used the momentum to jump on the board first with a goal from Sarah Medina as she chipped a shot over the Cardinal goalkeeper, Kelli Sontag. Ally Tamerius picked up the assist on the play.
The lead was short-lived as William Jewell came back a minute later to tie the game on a goal by Danielle Doerfler. The Cardinals broke the tie with a goal from Annie Shepard.
Doane came back and in the 67th minute, Clare Koeppe broke free and dropped a shot into the back corner of the net from nearly 25 yards away to tie the game.
In overtime, Doane made a push forward but a bad pass led to a Cardinal transition and the speed of William Jewell caught up to the Tigers as Sarah Franklin scored to give the Cardinals the win.
Doane will host Ottawa University on Saturday, September 11 at 5:00 PM.
