Doane Falls in Utah Opener
Turnovers and offensive rebounds allowed in the first half spelled doom for the Tiger women's basketball team as they fell to William Penn University in the first game of the Dixie State Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Utah. William Penn is receiving votes in the NAIA poll and won by a score of 83-59.
Doane found itself trailing by 21 points before reaching double-digits in points. WPU led 30-9 in the first 13 minutes of play. The Statesmen took a 42-22 lead into halftime as they out-scored the Tigers 22-3 in points off turnovers and 14-1 in second chance points.
The Tigers took better control of the ball in the second half and allowed few offensive rebounds. William Penn took advantage of free throw opportunities in the second half to maintain their lead.
Cheryl Braithwait led the Tigers with 16 points but had the unfortunate double-double with 11 turnovers. Doane committed 32 turnovers as a team which led to 34 William Penn points. Doane was out-rebounded by one, 42-41, but allowed 22 offensive boards, which resulted in 19 second chance points. Three Tigers posted five rebounds, Madara Upeniece, Kalen Carlson and Nicole Starns. Ashley Daily had four assists for Doane.
The Tigers will take on College of St. Mary in the consolation game on Sunday afternoon.
