Doane Drops Season Opener

The Doane men's tennis team opened the 2011 season with a loss to Ashford University. The Saints, formally known as Mount St. Clare College, had not held a men's tennis program since the 1999-2000 academic year. Ashford won 8-1 over the Tigers.

In singles action, Ross Schulenberg picked up the lone Doane point in a tie-breaker at No. 1. He defeated Carlos Pico, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 1-0 (10-4). Chance Hohensee lost at No. 2 to Alvaro Moreno, 3-6, 0-6. At No. 3, Sam Tipton fell to Luis Castillo, 0-6, 3-6.

Josh Johnson dropped his match at No. 4 to Moises Hernandez, 0-6, 0-6. Phil Cook fell to Jake Dunn at No. 5 single, 5-7, 3-6. Aaron Haag lost at No. 6 to Kyle Deckard, 6-2, 4-6, 0-1 (8-10).

In double action, Schulenberg and Tipton lost to Pico and Castillo, 5-8. Johnson and Hohensee lost at No. 2 doubles to Moreno and Hernandez, 6-8. Mick Steiner teamed with Cook at No. 3, falling to Dunn and Deckard, 0-8.

The Tigers will face Bethany College on Saturday, February 19, in Lincoln.
