Doane band director Jay Gilbert celebrates 25th anniversary with Homecoming Concert

Jay Gilbert

Dr. Jay Gilbert, director of instrumental music at Doane University, will be celebrating his 25th year of teaching at Doane next weekend with a special Homecoming Alumni Concert. Around 85 alumni will be coming back to perform – believed to be the largest crowd of band alumni to ever return for a Homecoming concert.

Dr. Gilbert conducts the Concert Band, the Tiger Pep Band, and the Community Concert Band. Dr. Gilbert has received several awards during his time teaching, including being honored with a Distinguished Service Award from the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association, a Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association and an Artist’s Fellowship from the Nebraska Arts Council.

At Doane, Gilbert has been recognized as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the university’s student congress and has received the Zenon Hansen Leadership Award for his outstanding contributions to the university. He has also been inducted into the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Band Hall of Fame.
