Overview

Endorsement in Special Education

Students are required by the State of Nebraska to take the Nebraska Praxis II test for certification.

Endorsement in Special Education - THREE Options

Option 1:  Special Education 7 – 12 (For certified teachers)
Option 2:  Special Education K-6 (For certified teachers)
Option 3:  Special Education K-12 (ONLY for Initial Certification at the Advanced Level Students)

Program Requirements

These courses make up the 31 hours of Required Courses for "ALL" SPECIAL EDUCATION Certificate candidates – see below for Additional Requirements for each Option - 1, 2, or 3

EDS-620 Exceptional Child 
EDS-622 School Programming for Exceptional Youth
EDS-626 Advanced Instructional Modifications and Accommodations 
EDS-631 Teaching Strategies for Exceptional Children
EDS-621 Advanced Assessment – 3 credit hours
EDS-621L Advanced Assessment Practicum (1 credit)
EDS-610 Collaborative Teaching: An Inclusion Model
EDS-632 Critical Issues in Special Education
EDS-699 Behavior Intervention Strategies 
EDS-625 Methods of Teaching Mild/Moderate Special Education
EDU-663 Reading/Writing in the Content Area
 
One of the following:
EDU 645 Assessment of Literacy
EDU 614 Assessment of Literacy Development
EDU 602 Assessment of Learning
 
 

Option 1:  For the 7-12 Special Education Endorsement complete the following:

In addition to the above coursework; complete the following for Special Education 7-12:
EDS-680B Practicum for Special Education 7-12 
For elementary teachers who wish to add this endorsement you must complete 9 hours in a core content area (math, science, language arts, social science, etc.) and a second practicum experience also in a secondary school.  
 

Option 2:  For the K-6 Special Education Endorsement:

In addition to the above coursework; complete the following for Special Education K-6
EDS-680A Practicum for Special Education in K-6 
For secondary teachers who wish to add this endorsement you must complete one reading, one writing, and one mathematics course for elementary students and a second practicum in elementary.
 

Option 3:  K-12 Special Education Certification - ONLY for Initial Certification at the Advanced Level Students

EDU-602 or EDU-614 or EDU-645 Assessment – 3 credit hours
EDS-625 Methods of Teaching Mild/Moderate Special Education – 3 credit hours
EDS-633 (Substitutes EDU-633) Special Education Practicum 7-12 – 3 credit hours
EDS-655 Student Teaching (Clinical Practice Experience) – 8 credit hours
EDU-663 Reading & Writing in the Content Area – 3 credit hours 
EDU-665 Beginning Teacher Seminar for Special Education – 3 credit hours
EDS-680A Practicum for Special Education in K-6 – 3 credit hours
EDS-699 Special Education Content Test Preparation – 1 credit hour
*Students must complete one reading, one writing, and one mathematics course for elementary students – 9 credit hours
* In addition, complete all other Initial Certification at the Advanced Level requirements (EDU-613, EDU-624, EDU-625 or EDU-636 or EDU-638)
