My advisor mentioned doing a Directed Study or Tutorial, how do I register for that?

Directed Study and Tutorial forms are available at the Registrar's Office.  Students must complete the appropriate form and submit it to the Registrar's Office.  Advisors cannot schedule these courses through WebAdvisor.

My advisor mentioned I need a course substitution. What do I do?

First decide if the substitution is in the Doane Plan or major/minor.  If the substitution is in the Doane Plan there is a form to complete that also explains the required steps.  If the substitution is in your major/minor, send an email to your advisor explaining the substitution.  Upon your advisors approval they will forward it to the appropriate Division Chair, who will review it for approval, and then forward it to the Registrar to be posted on your academic record.

My roommate just moved out! What do I?

If you lose your roommate shortly before or during the academic year, you have a couple options.

For vacancies after Census Day, you can keep your room without being charged for a private.  Doane Housing may assign a roommate for you, or reassign you to a vacancy in another room, but your housing rate for the semester won't go up.  In order to avoid the private room rate next semester, however, you will need to find a roommate before the following Census Day.  Alternately, you can opt to pay for a private for the remainder of the semester/year.  Doing so will increase your housing fee, but Doane Housing will not assign a resident to the empty spot in your room, nor will we reassign you to another room unless housing needs mandate it.  Housing moves and forced dissolution of private rooms is exceptionally rare.

If your roommate leaves before Census Day, you are responsible for finding a new roommate or paying the private rate for the room.  This means you can either find someone to move in with you, or find someone and move in with them.  You must either reserve the room as a private or begin the room move process by Census Day in order to avoid a private charge.

Paying for printing and copying

If you are a student of Doane College you are not charged for copying or printing in the library for academic purposes. Faculty and staff of the college should fill out a charge slip at the circulation desk so copies can be charged to the appropriate department. All others are asked to report their printer/copier usage at the circulation desk and pay $.05 per copy.

Preparing Your Computer to bring on campus

Before You Come to Campus

  • Windows users:
    • If you do not have an antivirus program installed - download AVG and install it on your computer to protect your computer until you get to campus, and when you get to campus.  AVG is free and may be found here .  This will protect your computer from harmful software, and having a clean computer will speed up your computer registration process!

    • If you already have an anti-virus program installed - The Doane University residential network or ResNet requires students to run AVG 8.0 antivirus that is free to download.  If you have other anti-virus programs this program will supplement the existing anti-virus.

    • Run Windows Updates-Visit the web site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and do the following:

    • Make sure you have Windows updates turned on.

    • Scan your computer and install all critical updates. You may have to run windows updates more than once for this process to complete.  To be safe run it at least three times.

    • Turn off your Windows Firewall-If you have Windows XP, turn on your Windows Firewall.

    • Get Spybot Search & Destroy-Download, install, and run Spybot Search & Destroy.

    • Uninstall Any Peer-2-Peer Applications-Remove any Peer-to-Peer applications such as Bittorrent, Limewire, Bearshare, etc..

    • Know the Law of the Land-Read and understand the Appropriate Use Policy , and the Technology Handbook as these rules and regulations will be enforced on the TigerNet.

  • Macintosh users:  Check for updates by selecting the Apple menu and system update.

  • Linux Users: Your operating system is not supported on Doane University's campus.

Print double-sided documents

The two large printer/copiers in the library have the ability to duplex printouts. If you are copying at the printer, select TWO-SIDED COPY on the display panel, and then choose the appropriate input and output (e.g., 1-to-2, 2-to-2, etc.). If you are printing from a computer, select the Lib1SHARP or Lib2SHARP printer, then click on the Preferences button. Select 2-sided (Book) under Document style and OK. Continue by clicking on the Print button. NOTE: The printer also can staple your document if you select staples under Finishing on the Preferences window.

Register your computer on campus
The Registration Process:

Request materials from interlibrary loan

Almost any information resource can be obtained from other libraries throughout the United States and the world. If you find a citation for information you wish to use, bring the citation to the library and request an Interlibrary Loan Form at the circulation desk at the library entrance, or complete the online Interlibrary Loan Request found on the library's website. The print form should be returned to the circulation desk. The Interlibrary Loan Assistant will enter your request into the system and then contact you when the material has been received by the library. Please refer to the interlibrary loan policies for more information.
