The exceptional service award recognizes alumni that have provided extraordinary service to forward the cause of Doane University through volunteer efforts. We are pleased to announce Elva Anderson Mares '52 as the 2012 Exceptional Service Award winner.

Elva Anderson Mares '52 graduated from Bertrand High school in 1948. Following in the footsteps of her grandfather, Jordan Kokjer 1895 and her mother, Katherine Kokjer Anderson '22. Elva entered Doane University in the fall of 1948. While in school she worked for Gus Lindberg, the Vice President of the college. She was a member of the Omega Psi Theta sorority and was president of the group her senior year. She met her husband, Jack Mares '50 at Doane and they were married in September of 1952. Elva and Jack had three children, Diane, David (deceased) and Mary; three grandchildren, Natalie, Nate and Jackie. She became Parish Secretary for First Lutheran Church in Lincoln and continued that job for 38 years retiring at the end of June this year.

Elva has been involved and supportive of many activities at Doane. She has volunteered for countless events over the years, served on the Alumni Council for six years and now writes the Half Century Newsletter. She encourages students to attend Doane at every chance. Her granddaughter Natalie Mares graduated in 2008 and Natalie's mother, Jan, finished her college career last year as a non-traditional student on the Lincoln campus.
