Admission to Teacher Education

By the spring term of their sophomore year, Doane University students must formally declare their major. Students who choose Elementary Education or Special Education as a major, or who plan to take professional experience learning to certification in a secondary subject area must make a formal application for candidacy in the Teacher Education Program.

Please Note: All students will be required to undergo a background check through OneSource prior to admission to the Teacher Education program and student teaching. The Education department will provide all the needed information to complete this task. The cost is $35 and will be charged to the student’s account.

Candidacy Requirements:

  • Choose a Major.
  • Complete a written application form during the Spring term of your Sophomore year and submit that form to the Education Office.
  • Gain acceptance by the Teacher Education Committee.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.6 in all courses.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 in all Education courses.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all Major courses.
  • Obtain a recommendation from the teacher(s) whom you have completed teaching assistance with for Practicum I.
  • Obtain a recommendation from the faculty in your major.
  • Obtain a recommendation from the faculty in Education.
  • Crete Campus Students: Obtain a recommendation from the Student Leadership Office.
  • Obtain a recommendation from a Medical Professional.
  • Demonstrate basic mathematics skill through one of the following:
    • Achieving an acceptable score on the mathematics portion of the ACT or SAT test.
    • Pass the Doane University Computational Skills Test.
    • Complete a designated course in computational skills with a grade of C- or higher.
  • Students with any grade in cognate that is below C- will have that grade reviewed and may be required to repeat the course.
  • Students with negative comments on those recommendations which relate to personality may be required to complete a personality survey. The form of the survey is determined by the teacher Education Committee in consultation with the Teacher Education faculty.

Nebraska State School Board Requirements

Each student must affirm that they have not been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude. The State Board further states that felons may not observe, assist, or take part in any K-12 classroom with such a conviction.
If there should be such an instance, the student may appeal to the State Board of Education for review.

In compliance with this rule, each student must affirm yearly, prior to student assisting or teaching in any practicum methods class or student teaching experience, that they have not been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude. Furthermore, it is the student’s responsibility to report any change in their status to this rule. Students not meeting this standard are not allowed to participate in K-12 activities until they have received permission to proceed by the State Board.

Each student must affirm that they do not have an order or determination currently in effect by a court or any other governmental body which finds the student to be any of the following:

  • A mentally ill and dangerous person.
  • Mentally incompetent to stand trial.
  • Acquitted of criminal charges because of insanity.
  • An incapacitated person in need of a guardian.
  • Unable to manage their property due to mental illness, deficiency, chronic use of drugs or intoxication.
  • Currently an inpatient or resident in a mental health facility due to the determination of a qualified mental health professional.

CORE Tests Information

As required by the Nebraska State Department of Education, each student must achieve a passing score on the Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading, Writing, and Math. The initial core tests must be taken by May 1st of your Sophomore year. A student must pass the CORE tests by the end of the first semester of their Junior year. If the student does not pass the CORE tests, they may not enroll in education classes.

The following scores have been set by the State as minimum passing scores:

  • Reading (156)
  • Writing (162)
  • Math (150)

In the special case of students from underrepresented groups, if the student has been denied admissions to Teacher Education on the basis of CORE scores below Nebraska minimally acceptable level, the student may continue in education courses beyond the first methods course provided that the student is also enrolled and participating in special courses designed to improve performance on the CORE. Education faculty assist all students to enroll in these special courses. Students denied solely on the basis of CORE scores may retake the test as many times as they wish. After completion of the test with scores above the Nebraska minimum, the student may reapply for admission to the Teacher Education Program.

Students who are denied admissions due solely to below-passing scores on the CORE may choose to continue taking education courses through Education 321 and one methods course, but must have passed the CORE and been admitted to the Teacher Education Program prior to continuing in the program beyond that point.

Once the tests are passed, the student may again reapply for admission to teacher education. Individual cases may be reviewed by the certification officer.

Admission and Appeals

Students can be granted full, provisional, admission with concerns, or denial of admission to the Teacher Education Program by the Teacher Education Committee. The student will be informed by letter within a week of the Committee’s decision about the application to the Teacher Education Program.

The student has the right to appeal to any of the decisions and can request a personal hearing before the Committee to seek a change of the decisions. Their hearings are scheduled in August, prior to the beginning of the Fall Semester. Personal appearance before the Committee, with another faculty member a consul, is desired, for the purpose of presenting additional data and answering questions prior to the Committee vote.

The procedure is as follows:

  • Having a personal interview with the Chairman of the Education Division.
  • Setting a date for the Teacher Education Committee to meet for reconsideration.
