Study Abroad Information
All students are eligible to receive a Doane Travel Scholarship (stipend) to help pay for costs to study abroad whether it be for a semester, summer or an Interterm trip. The travel scholarship is only available for one trip. To determine the amount of the travel scholarship the student should contact the Student Accounts Office.
Students must have their study abroad programs approved through the Office of International Programs and have all required paperwork completed.
Students Not Required to Study Abroad:
Students who are not required to study abroad as part of their graduation requirements are unable to use their Doane College institutional scholarships. However, the student may be able to use federal financial aid dollars, if they meet federal eligibility requirements. The student should contact the Financial Aid Office to determine what types of federal financial aid they may be eligible to receive.
Students Required to Study Abroad:
Students who are required to Study Abroad to complete their graduation requirements are able to use their Doane College institutional scholarships (provided the student meets the minimum scholarship maintenance requirements). Honors students and Foreign Language majors are eligible to receive their Doane College Institutional aid. The student will only receive aid for one approved study abroad program while attending Doane College.
In addition to the student's institutional aid, federal and state financial aid (Pell Grants, Federal Stafford loans, etc) can be used to study abroad, if the student meets federal aid eligibility requirements.
*African Semester Abroad:
The African semester abroad meets the graduation requirement for Honors students. Students who are not required to study abroad, but are going on the African semester abroad are able to use their Doane College Institutional aid and their federal aid for this semester (provided eligibility requirements are met). This is because the student is being taught by Doane College professor/s.
If a student chooses to go abroad for the summer rather than a semester in order to meet graduation requirements, he/she is eligible to receive Doane College institutional aid. If the student chooses this option, he/she can receive up to 25% of his/her Doane College institutional award or up to $2000, whichever is less. To qualify for the institutional dollars the student must complete a minimum of 4 credit hours for the summer term.
Additionally, the student may be able to use federal financial aid if they have remaining eligibility for the year, and are completing at least 6 credit hours during the summer abroad
* If the student in enrolled in at least 6 credits, he/she should contact the Financial Aid Office to determine whether or not he/she has any federal eligibility remaining.
