Students of Students for Change and Multicultural Support Services staff, collect donations for Faith Formation and Healing Mission in Lesotho, South AfricaDoane College is honoring World Aids Day 2006 with a public presentation through Camp Kindle and a drive to gather items for a South African mission trip.

The 19th annual World Aids Day - the international day of action on HIV and AIDS - takes place Dec. 1.

The public can hear from youth affected by HIV and AIDS during "Speak Out," through Camp Kindle, beginning at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 30 in Heckman Auditorium.

Camp Kindle enhances the well-being of youth infected with and affected by HIV and AIDS, primarily through camping events held in Nebraska and California. Camp Kindle created a speaker's bureau to allow the children of camp to share their life stories dealing with HIV and AIDS. The bureau became known as "Speak Out" (Sharing Personal Experience And Knowledge  - Our Unique Truths). The event, co-sponsored by Doane's Psych/Soc Club, Residence Life organization, and Multicultural Support Services, is free and open to the public.

Doane also is supporting global efforts against AIDS, gathering items for a Faith Formation and Healing Mission in Lesotho, South Africa. The mission will serve women and children affected by HIV/AIDS. Doane's Multicultural Support Services and Students for Change gathered items such as peroxide, first aid kits, cotton gauze, white sheets, hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes, and feminine hygiene products.

Donations will be accepted until Nov. 17. Rev. Karla J. Cooper, Doane's chaplain and coordinator of service programs, is among 95 African-American women clergy, missionaries and lay leaders in the medical profession who will take part in the mission in December. Cooper will transport the donated items to Lesotho, one of the poorest countries in the world.
