Tigers Win GPAC Opener Over MLC

Doane used the experience they have gained with the tough strength of schedule in non-conference as they opened GPAC play with an impressive 5-0 victory over Midland Lutheran College on Wednesday evening in Crete.

The Tigers struck first in the 14th minute of play as Matt Sifers scored on a pass from Kyle Smith.  Smith then followed with a goal in the 26th minute off a pass from Monday Akogwu.  Doane lead 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half of play, Smith got the scoring started with an unassisted goal in the 58th minute.  Tom Heavey scored on an unassisted goal in the 68th minute as he stole a loose ball from Midland Lutheran goalkeeper Eric Vrba and found the back of the net.  The final goal of the game came off a corner kick by Andrew Moore.  Juan Padilla put the corner kick in the back of the net, giving Moore an assist.

Tiger goalkeeper Chris Kavinsky, the current GPAC Defender-of-the-Week, finished with three saves in 81 minutes of play while Vrba finished with four saves for MLC.

Doane will host Dordt College on Saturday at 7:15 PM on Simon Field.
