Tigers Win at Hastings Invite
The Tigers got the Hastings College Invite off to a good start by defeating GPAC foe Briar Cliff University 8-1 in a non-conference game. The victory moved the Tigers' record to 4-2.
Doane was the away team in the game and scored early, plating three runs in the first inning and two more in the second. Mindy Nguyen got the Tigers started in the first with a single and stole base. Amy Hamik bunted Nguyen over to third base and Alysia Johnson singled to score her. Stephanie Mosley followed with a two-run home run to complete the Tigers' first frame.
In the second inning, Halea Messersmith reached base on an error by the first baseman. With two outs and Messersmith on second base, Hamik singled to score a run. Alyssa Ledon and Johnson hit back-to-back singles to plate Hamik.
The Tigers plated a single run in the fifth inning when Jennifer Montoya singled to score Pamela Masker.
In the seventh inning, Mosley led off with a triple and scored on a Masker sacrifice fly. Skyler Rowe closed out the Tiger scoring with a two-out single to plate Remmers from second base after she reached on a fielder's choice and stole a base.
Briar Cliff picked up their lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning when they collected three hits off of Johnson. Johnson (2-1) finished the game allowing six hits and striking out nine Charger batters.
Doane collected 14 hits, two a piece by Hamik, Johnson, Mosley, Masker and Montoya.
The Tigers will play Black Hills State and Dana College on Saturday. Black Hills State is in their first softball season since the program was closed down in 1981.
