Tigers Soar High, Clip the Falcons

Doane's men's basketball team got the season off to a strong start by defeating Friends University on Friday evening in Crete, 81-66.  The Falcons were receiving votes in the NAIA preseason poll.

The Tigers led the majority of the game a received balanced scoring as five players were in double-figures, including two players off the bench.  Doane shot 51.6-percent as a team while Friends was limited to 37.3-percent.

Trent Schlautman, a junior from Omaha, led all scorers as he posted 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting.  He hit 4-of-6 3-point attempts in the game.  Brett Jorgensen scored 16 points off the bench while three players finished with 11 points apiece, Jens Scholl, Zach Moult and Bryan Meyer.  Schlautman also led the Tigers in rebounds with seven.  Scholl was joined by Brett McFarland and Tyler Weatherholt with a team-high three assists each.

Moult, a freshman from Australia, put an exclamation mark on the game and got the fans on their feet with a drive from the free throw line with 37 seconds remaining and slamming home the final points for the Tigers over a Friends' defender.

Friends was led by Romar Jones who finished with 17 points.  Thalen Shiver led the team with a game-high eight rebounds.

Doane will host No. 12 Bellevue University at 3:00 PM on Saturday in the field house.
