Bethany College scored the first goal of the men's soccer game on Wednesday evening. It appeared to wake the Tigers up, as they went on to score eight unanswered goals for the 8-1 victory in the home opener.
Nicholas Butler scored at the 8:25 mark in the first half to give the Swedes the 1-0 lead. At 9:53, Kyle Smith tied the game for Doane with a goal off of a direct kick. Ten more minutes would go by before Doane took the lead on an Andrew Moore goal. Smith added his second goal of the game at the 28:30 mark in the first half. Monday Akogwu picked up the fourth goal for the Tigers at the 33:09 mark. Jeff Wick and Jordan Dahlinger each scored within a minute span to give Doane a 6-1 lead heading into halftime.
Akogwu picked up his second goal of the game just four minutes into the second half. Jose Mejia closed out the Tiger scoring with a goal in the 71st minute of play. Jeff Wick notched three assists for Doane while Akogwu, Bryce Petersen and Marcus Lyon also had assists.
Chris Kavinsky picked up the win, allowing a goal in 45 minutes of play. Steven Morris played the final 45 minutes for the Tigers in goal.
Doane will take on Briar Cliff University on September 15 in Sioux City, Iowa. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
