The 2009 track and field season got under way on Saturday in Crete with the Ward Haylett Invitational. The Tiger tracksters put up solid marks for having only a week of practice following the holiday break.
In women's action, Abby Schlueter won two events for Doane as she took the title in the long and triple jumps. The Tigers took seven other event titles. DeeJay Silcott won the 55m dash while Regan Carlstrom took the 200m dash title.
Haley Bergstrom won the 600m run with Kym Bennett taking the 800m run title. The Tiger 4x400m relay team of Silcott, Bergstrom, Carlstrom and Ale Cano was victorious.
In the field events, Cano claimed the pole vault title as she edged teammate Carly Weisgerber in number of attempts at 10-10.00. Kelsee Meissner won the shot put.
On the men's side, Virgil Mitchell set a meet and stadium record in the 200m dash. Kedrick Kelley won the 60m dash as the Tigers took the top three spots. Vince Martinez claimed the 400m dash crown.
The Tigers took the top four spots in the 600m run, led by Cody Ingold. The Tiger relay teams were also successful, taking first place. The 4x400m team consisted of Martinez, Brett Cribelli, Cody Ingold and Virgil Mitchell. The 4x800m team posted a time of 8:23.56.
In the field events, Jared Schuurmans hit two automatic qualifying marks in the weight and shot put while winning the two events. Maurice Smith hit an automatic mark in the long jump, setting a meet record with a jump of 23-10.25.
Nathan Greene claimed the triple jump and Nathan Teten was the champion in the pole vault.
Doane will participate in two meets, the UNL Holiday Inn Open and the Doane Field Events Meet. The UNL meet will be held January 16-17 while the Doane meet will be held on January 17.
