Tigers & Lancers Split Double-Dip

The Tiger baseball team came away with a split on Sunday afternoon in Yankton, S.D., against Mount Marty College. Doane took game one, 5-0, before dropping the second game, 4-3.

Game One (W 5-0)
Doane received another strong outing from Chance Brull on the mound as he limited to Mount Marty to three hits. Brull picked up his second shutout of the season as he struck out five in the game.

The two teams were scoreless through three innings but the Lancers mounted the biggest threat in the third. Back-to-back singles followed by a walk loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Brull relied on his defense and induced an inning-ending ground ball double play started by Anthony Hincy.

The play sparked the Tigers and Doane posted three runs in the top of the fourth. Four consecutive hits to open the inning plated the first run and loaded the bases for the Tigers. Ethan Schroeder led off with a single and scored on a hit by Mike Albert. Anthony Dunn plated a run on a fielder's choice and Jason West followed with a sacrifice fly to cap the Tiger scoring.

Doane added two runs in the fifth. Hincy was hit by a pitch with one down and followed with a pair of stolen bases. He came in to score on a squeeze bunt by AJ Spanel. Mike Albert brought in Schroeder as he reached on an error.

Brull finished out the final three innings by facing the minimum of nine batters as he did not allow a runner.

Spanel finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI. Mike Korsakas added a pair of hits while Schroeder led the Tigers with two runs scored.

Game Two (L 3-4)
After falling behind early, the Tigers rallied with three runs in the middle innings. Mount Marty answered back with a pair of runs in the final two innings for the walk-off victory.

The Lancers plated a run in the first and third innings to jump in front 2-0. Doane came back and tied the game at 2-all in the fifth.

Jason West and Austin Tharp led off the fifth inning with a pair of singles. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Flott. Hincy cut the lead in half with a RBI-groundout. Schroeder followed with a two-out single to tie the game.

In the sixth, Doane took the lead with a run. Mike Albert drew a lead-off walk and stole second base. Following a groundout, Anthony Dunn delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Albert.

Mount Marty answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. The Lancers had an opportunity for more runs but Dunn erased a pair of runners who tried to steal bases.

Jason Schmidt struck out the side in the top of the seventh but not until Doane had the bases loaded with two outs. Mike Albert struck out to end the inning.

The Lancers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh following a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. Mitch VandenBerge was unable to get out of the inning as he walked his fifth batter of the game to plate the winning run.

Doane was held to four hits in the game while the Lancers had seven. Mount Marty also picked up nine walks compared to four by Doane. VandenBerge took the loss, pitching behind starter Nick Dawson and reliever Miles Arehart.
