Tigers Fall in Last Seconds
The Tigers put on one of their best offensive performances through the first three quarters of play as they built a 20-3 lead after one play in the third quarter. However, Hastings rallied to score 19 unanswered points to pull out a 22-20 victory in Crete.
The Tigers opened the scoring with 9:37 left in the first quarter when JR Artozqui hit Alex Renshaw for a 20 yard touchdown pass.
Hastings picked up their first points of the game with 5:47 left in the first when Austin Moore hit an 18-yard field goal.
Doane built on their lead when JR Artozqui ran the ball in with 5:14 left in the second quarter for a 13-3 lead. The Tigers' possession was 15 plays for 85 yards and covered 6:35 on the clock.
After taking the second half kickoff to the Doane 40 yard line, Justin Nelson ran 60 yards for the Tigers final score of the day.
Hastings picked up a field goal in the third quarter to pull within 20-6 going into the final quarter of play.
The Broncos put together two drives in the fourth quarter of 10+ plays as they pulled within 20-19 on a Kevin Lengel eight-yard reception. The point after attempt was blocked by Alvin Yates, leaving the Broncos to go for an on-sides kick.
Austin Moore's kick was perfect as it took a few low bounces before one high bounce that went over the Tigers' heads and Hastings recovered.
Doane's defense was strong, forcing Hastings into a fourth and eight from midfield. However, Jerad Krejci found Lance Beethe along the Hastings sideline for a 34 yard completion and put the Broncos in field goal range for the game-winner. Moore's 30 yard attempt was good with 11 seconds left and Doane was unable to come up with a return in the end.
The most glaring stat in the game was that Hastings was able to go 4-for-4 on fourth down, including 3-for-3 in the fourth quarter. Each conversion eventually ended in a Hastings score.
For the game, Doane compiled 304 yards, 198 on the ground. Justin Nelson ran for 157 yards and one touchdown. He averaged 6.3 yards per carry. JR Artozqui was 10-21 through the air for 106 yards. Alex Renshaw had four receptions for 55 yards.
Simon Mitchell collected 15 tackles for the Tigers, including three for a loss of yards. Will Sadowski collected 11 tackles.
Doane will be at Briar Cliff University in the season finale on November 11.
