Tigers, Bobcats Split at Peru
The Doane softball team posted a split with Peru State in non-conference action on Sunday. Doane took game one, 5-4 in eight innings, but dropped the night-cap, 6-2.
Game One (W 5-4, 8 inn.)
Doane and Peru State were scoreless through the first four innings before the Tigers jumped on the board.
Alyssa Maraia led off the fifth with a solo home run for the Tigers. Peru State came back in the sixth with a run to tie the game.
In the eighth inning, Christy Kobza put the Tigers ahead with a single down the left field line to score Andrea Gonzales from second base. Shelby Mendlik followed with a double to bring in Gina Falciani and Jenny Jackson, who was running for Kobza. Brooke Sampson added a single to bring in Mendlik.
Peru State came back in the bottom of the eighth and plated three runs. Mendlik struck out Alyssa Mangum with the tying run at first base to end the game.
Maraia finished with two of the Tigers' six hits. Mendlik recorded the win, throwing eight innings.
Game Two (L 2-6)
Five errors in the third inning allowed four runs to score and Peru State came away with the split.
Doane scored first with a solo home run in the top of the third from Katie Mosley. Peru State took the lead in the bottom of the inning with four runs.
The Bobcats added two runs in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. Doane came back with a run in the seventh. Sampson led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. She scored on a pinch-hit single by Amber Stater.
Megan Wingate took the loss, going 5.2 innings and allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits.
